A few days ago I was watching Weeds with my boyfriend. Since my hair was still damp from the shower, I had draped it over the back of the couch to avoid provoking the angry frizz that springs up the moment my wet hair touches anything. My bf, who doesn’t seem to realize that “anything” includes his hands, leaned over and began stroking my head. I cringed internally but didn’t stop him because, first, the damage was already done, and second, there are things in life more important than good hair. I was actually starting to enjoy it when he had to ruin the moment by saying, “You know, when your hair is drying it makes you look kind of like a poodle.”

Grrrrrr. What I call tactlessness my bf calls “honesty”. Whatever that means.

Anyway, he goes on to tell me, “I’m not saying you should straighten your hair all the time, cause you know I actually kind of like it now, but sometime I would like see how you look with straight hair.”

You “actually” “kind of” like it now? So I shouldn’t straighten it “all the time”? Ummmm, what are you trying to tell me?

My bf usually says what he means, so I decide to take his words at face value. To translate, he wasn’t thrilled about my hair at first but now can recognize that curly hair can be beautiful too. Um, duh.

I’m ashamed to say that this didn’t stop me from googling ways to straighten my hair. I came across an article from The Beauty Brains that listed seven ways to straighten curly hair, all of which involved either frying hair with heat or chemicals or coating it in sticky substances that would “rigidly hold the hair straight” but make it “not look and feel natural.” Uggg.

Okay, so I know that according to the beauty world, a person who gives up before even trying to master a new technique is a lazy slob with no self esteem. But the truth is, I spent my adolescence perfecting a routine that actually works (unless it’s raining of course, in which case the good girls who straighten their hair are in the same damp, frizzy boat) to make my curls look smooth and defined. The last thing I need is breakage, split ends and product buildup, even if it does result in hair that temporarily responds to the rules of gravity. The point is to look good, not to look like everyone else, right? And let’s face it, even if I managed to make my hair stick straight, it would never resemble that gleaming sheet of silk occasionally achieved (with effort, I’m sure) by girls with naturally straight or slightly wavy hair. Instead, it would look like curly hair that has been straightened, dull and stiff with hardly any movement or shine. I actually think I’d rather emulate my neighbor’s labradoodle. I mean, come on, how cute do you get?

Maybe one day I’ll borrow my sister’s flat iron and brave the split ends in the name of love. But in the meantime, my bf seems to think I’m pretty beautiful, curly hair and all.
